Halloween is the one night of the year where it is
appropriate to wear a mask and hide who you really are. Children want to be recognized, they want to
be known to the adults they encounter, even in costume.
Engaging with them:
Step #1 when children knock on your door react to their
costumes.
- Princesses, “Your majesty” and give a little bow
- Ghost, pretend to be a little frightened
- A cartoon figure, ask for their autograph or
- Compliment them on their costume
Step #2 then ask their names and say hello.
Step #3 if there is a parent with them address the parent
and complement them on having such well behaved children.
Step #4 give them their treat.
Step #5 thank them for coming to your home.
Prepare your home for Trick or Treaters:
- Ensure that the sidewalk to your front door is well lite.
- If you have a large enough front porch to greet trick or treaters there add extra light (a lamp) and step out onto the porch to hand out treats.
- If you see or hear of trick or treaters being bullied or breaking the law be prepared to call the police.
The Days Following Halloween:
- As you encounter children that you remember from Halloween night say hello to them and once again comment on their costume.
